Distillation

Every decision we make is shaped by a clear sense of purpose.

Herbal Distillation at the Ozark Homestead

Distillation is at the heart of what we do at Ozark Witch Hazel Botanicals — but it doesn’t begin at the still. It begins with seeds, soil, and seasons.

On our Ozark homestead, we start many of our medicinal plants from seed, tend them through the growing season, harvest them with care, and distill them slowly — paying attention to what each plant offers and how it responds to the process. This seed-to-product approach allows us to understand our plants fully, from their first leaves to the final hydrosol.

We distill all of our own alcohol-free witch hazel hydrosols, along with many other herbal hydrosols and essential oils, using traditional steam distillation and hydro distillation methods. These processes allow us to capture the living essence of the plant — not just its scent, but the subtle qualities that make each distillation unique and useful.

From Seed to Still

Our work begins long before distillation.

We start seeds, grow medicinal herbs, and care for plants throughout their lifecycle. At spring festivals especially, we share this full journey — showing how a plant moves from seed, to garden, to still, and finally into the products people use in their daily lives.

Many of the medicinal herbs we grow and offer are uncommon or difficult to find. Sharing these plants, and the knowledge needed to grow them, is an important part of our work.

What Is Herbal Distillation?

Herbal distillation is a time-honored method that uses water and heat to extract aromatic and water-soluble compounds from plants. Depending on the plant material, we use steam distillation or hydro distillation to achieve the most appropriate and respectful extraction.

Fresh or carefully dried botanicals are placed in the still, gently heated, and the resulting vapor is cooled back into liquid.

From this process, we collect:

• Hydrosols — aromatic waters rich in plant compounds

• Essential oils — when present, naturally separating during distillation

No solvents.

No additives.

Just plants, water, heat, and patience.

What We Grow and Distill

Depending on the season, our work may include:

• Medicinal herbs grown from seed on our land

• Lavender and flowering plants

• Witch hazel leaves and twigs

• Rare or less-common botanicals chosen for their traditional uses

• Thoughtfully wild-harvested plants from the Ozarks

Every plant is selected with intention and respect, whether it is grown, gathered, or shared as a living plant for others to grow themselves.

Teaching & Demonstration at Festivals

At select festivals, we demonstrate herbal distillation live and share the full seed-to-product process. Visitors are invited to:

• See medicinal plants at different stages of growth

• Learn how to start their own herb and medicinal gardens

• Watch steam and hydro distillation in action

• Smell fresh hydrosols as they flow from the still

• Understand how plants become finished botanical products

Many people encounter distillation for the first time at our booth, and some go on to explore small-scale distillation themselves. We’re always happy to share knowledge and encourage curiosity.

Safety, Stewardship & Respect for the Process

Our distillation demonstrations are educational, controlled, and conducted with care. Equipment is monitored at all times, and our focus remains on preservation, plant knowledge, and respectful use of natural resources.

We see distillation as a teaching tool — a way to connect people back to plants, seasons, and traditional skills.

From the Garden to the Shelf

The hydrosols and botanicals we distill become the foundation of many of our products, including soaps, skincare, hair care, remedies, and seasonal offerings. By growing, harvesting, and distilling many of our own botanicals, we maintain integrity at every step.

Each batch reflects the seed it began from, the season it was grown, and the land it came from. No two distillations are ever the same.

A Living, Shared Tradition

For our family, this work is about more than products. It’s about sharing knowledge, preserving plant traditions, and helping others reconnect with the plants around them.

When you visit our booth or see the still in action, you’re stepping into a living process — one that begins with a seed and carries forward through hands, generations, and the land we call home.

We share our upcoming festival appearances on our website and in our blog posts. Please check back for 2026 festival locations, and we hope to see both familiar and new faces along the way.
